London to Delhi Wedding Photography Story: Sarika + Avin, New Delhi

A (Lutyens) New Delhi Wedding Photography Story

Sarika and Avin were married recently, in a lovely, east-meets-west wedding in the heart of New Delhi. They both live in London and have spent most of their adult lives in UK. They first met at a party a few years ago, started to whatsapp each other until they hit the point of no return! And what a lovely couple they make…

Arjun-Kartha-Candid-Wedding-Photography-Sarika-Avin-6

Even though Sarika left India when she was a child, she visits often and has a great fascination for Lutyens Delhi – the history, the monuments, the planned city, the greenery and beauty of it. As Delhi Wedding Photographers, we love it! She decided that whenever she was to marry, it would be in New Delhi and that too the prettiest part of it. Avin, who hasn’t been to India more than once, apart from his own wedding trip, was more than happy to help Sarika’s dream (wedding) come true. So they had their wedding – spread across lovely locations like The Park, New Delhi, the Shanghri-La and a lovely bungalow on Ashoka Road.

To fit in with Sarika’s love for the history and monuments of Delhi, we did their pre-wedding shoot at the Humayun’s Tomb in Nizamuddin.

Delhi Engagement Photography Story: Karishma + Aditya, Taj Mahal Hotel, India

A New Delhi Engagement Photography Story

Karishma and Aditya got engaged a few weeks ago in New Delhi, at the lovely Taj Mahal Hotel. When Karishma and her mother came to meet us for the very first time, we joked around with her about how she is too young to be talking about marriage – literally. She’s a design student at Pearl, barely in her final year! But 2 minutes of chatting with her and we just knew she was smitten!

After countless conversations within the family about “looking out for a good match for her”, Karishma warily gave in to exploring the idea of (an arranged) marriage, based on the assumption that it would take quite a while to find one. By then, she was sure that she would feel ready to get married. Little did she know that the very first meeting with the very first “proposal” would feel so right.

They hit it off instantly and, even during the engagement, obviously couldn’t keep their thoughts, eyes or hands off each other. They share such a lovely chemistry that it was a real pleasure to spend time shooting their special day.

We began by joining Karishma while she got ready for her big day...

akp-candid-wedding-photography-ka-engagement-4

She tried very hard to keep a straight face while we cracked some very silly and very inappropriate jokes!

And here we go with the grand entry…

akp-candid-wedding-photography-ka-engagement-43

akp-candid-wedding-photography-ka-engagement-41

We love this space at Taj so much — of course, the hotel staff is predictably dignified and more than a little serious – they wouldn’t allow any photos even a few steps outside the venue hired for the event. So we had to work very quietly and very quickly on these!

akp-candid-wedding-photography-ka-engagement-23

There was a lot of excitable meet-and-greet between the couple and their families…

A Kolkata Wedding Photography Story: Astha + Akhil, Taj Bengal

A Kolkata Wedding Photography Story: Astha + Akhil at the Taj Bengal, Kolkata

Astha and Akhil wed earlier this year in Kolkata, amidst much pomp and fanfare. A grand Marwari wedding, the main functions took place in Taj Bengal and The Hyatt, with the poojas and other smaller functions being held in Akhil’s lovely home in New Alipore. Introduced by their parents, they hit it off instantly and found much in common — what with both having lived away from home in boarding school.

We first met them a few months before their wedding, when we flew down to Kolkata to get a few pre-wedding portraits with them. Akhil suggested that we meet at the Kolkata Rowing Club and shoot in and around there and, boy, we were not disappointed! There was a lovely metal bridge behind the club and a semi-public park right outside with an old stone bridge and a swing — all making for some lovely spaces for us to shoot in. Here are a couple of our favourites from that session…

At the end of this session, we felt as if we had known Astha and Akhil forever and we were very excited to return for the wedding. And it was even better than we expected! Everything we heard about Astha from her friends and family confirmed our suspicion that she is everybody’s darling and that she deserved the “best wedding ever”, as she put it. Thankfully for her, Akhil is a perfectionist and can’t help but pay attention to detail – he delivered an amazing wedding, as promised!

Before the main function days, we got a quick sneak peek at Astha’s bachelorette! Of course, we excused ourselves before we saw (or captured) too much…

We managed a good night’s rest before the “serious” stuff began and were stoked to capture the many rituals that make up a Marwari wedding. Akhil lives in a joined family, with 4-5 uncles and their respective families. Their home is always alive with laughter, fun, pranks and overflowing with love and affection. It was such a happy space to shoot in.

Oz to India – A Wedding Photography Story in Delhi: Nikita + Sameer

Wedding photography is a curious thing – we truly believe that some marriages are created in heaven…even if they are arranged here on Earth! Nikita and Sameer wed a few weeks ago in the NCR and we had such a wonderful time shooting their wedding. Even though we do this for a living, it is always an incredible experience to be around a couple who are deeply in love.

Nikita & Sameer both live in Australia, as their families relocated there many years ago. Sameer’s parents saw Nikita at a friends home, during a Puja and instantly decided that they just had to introduce her to their son. The attraction and connection between the two young people was fairly instantaneous too — not very long after they met and began to date, Sameer organised an elaborate day out for Nikita, going around town in a carriage, and proposed! She obviously said yes, after which they met up with the parents to celebrate and seal the deal.

They decided to have the wedding in India, where both their families are from. The wedding in Delhi was a one-day affair, held at the Kempinski hotel in Ghaziabad. It was a medium sized affair, but so full of love, laughter and camaraderie that it was a delight to shoot.

We managed to squeeze in a small couple shoot at Rajpath in Central Delhi.

akp-indian-candid-wedding-photography-84

Oh, we just LOVE central Delhi!

Bangalore Wedding Photography Story | Reena + Anik

A Bangalore Wedding Photography Story

Reena & Anik had a lovely Destination Wedding at Golden Palms Resort & Spa in Bangalore a few weeks ago. The only word that we could think of to describe it is “multi-cultural”. It’s sounds cliched, we know. But consider this.

Reena is Tamil. Lives in Canada. The majority of her family lives in Tamil Nadu & Karnataka.

Anik is Gujrati. Born and raised in Canada. Has never lived in India. He visited India for the first time to scout the wedding venue.  In fact, his parents lived in Africa (Kenya, if we remember correctly) before they migrated to Canada. The rest of his family lives across the UK & North America.

They picked Bangalore as the destination and everybody converged for this lovely, fun-filled wedding spread across The Chancery, The Gateway Hotel and the Golden Palms Resort & Spa.

Reena & Anik first met at a party in Toronto, where they live. Not very long after, Anik told his parents he had met the girl he’s going to marry. That didn’t take very long at all. When the time was right, he surprised Reena during lunch at work and proposed. Roping in her boss and colleagues, he staged the whole thing and she was completely stunned. So much so that she couldn’t concentrate on any work at all for the rest of that day. Obviously. Which girl would?

All this led up to the wedding in Bangalore. The ceremony itself was primarily in Tamil style, but the Gujratis weren’t to be left behind with their traditions as well as the song and dance in the run-up to the wedding! What added to the fun of the wedding was that their closest friends from Toronto also flew down to Bangalore for the wedding — making the 3-day wedding a continuous riot.

The celebrations began with the Mehndi and the cocktail dinner…

Arranged.Love.Arranged: Abhinav+Arti

Arranged.Love.Arranged. We’re sure that you are wondering about the unusual description, because a wedding can either be arranged or love, right?

Wrong! In Abhinav and Arti’s case, it was exactly as we have named it. To top it all, it is also a cross continent love story, with many phone calls, video calls and flights between London and New Delhi!

Abhinav is a doctor, raised in and living in London. For all his time spent studying and working hard to become a successful doctor, he was equally fascinated by fast cars, Bollywood music and his family heritage as a Rajput. According to his mother, he was sure right from the very beginning that he would like to marry a Rajput girl. So when his parents came across one they liked, they were positive that he would fall in love at first sight.

And he did. Or rather, as Abhinav puts it, it was love at first sound! Within 2-3 long distance phone conversations, he was head over heels and had the “dil mein baji guitar” feeling almost instantly. And all this was before they had actually set eyes on each other.

For Arti too, the decision was almost instantaneous. According to her, Abhinav is everything she ever dreamed of and more. Many cross-continent conversations and meetings later, they finally got their dream wedding in Delhi.

Looking at them together, it wouldn’t take you more than an instant to appreciate their chemistry and how deeply in love they are. For us, it’s almost impossible to imagine them without the other.

A few days before the wedding, we snuck them away to The Oberoi in Gurgaon for a few couple portraits…

It was a beautiful wedding with a warm, loving family. The wedding rituals were an interesting mix of Rajput and Bihari cultures (the majority of Abhinav’s family had migrated to Bihar a few decades ago and the wedding drew from both cultures). The newly married couple couldn’t wait to start their lives together — being around them allowed us a peek into their beautiful story and we loved every minute of it!

Last, but not the least, here’s a preview of the wedding movie, created in collaboration with our fantastic partners – MixTape Films.

Destination Wedding Story: Meha + Utsav in Samode, Rajasthan

Destination weddings are such a delight and, more so, Rajasthan in the winter is a treat to shoot in. Meha and Utsav were married towards the end of 2013 amidst an intimate group of family and friends at Samode Palace and Samode Bagh in Rajasthan, about 40 minutes before Jaipur.

The events were beautifully planned, the decor was thoughtful and very thematic, food and alcohol flowed freely and it was one of the most fun weddings of the last year.

The couple had been schoolmates for most of their lives but didn’t discover love until very recently — just goes to show how, sometimes, we all miss the most obvious facts! From their difference in height to their choice of careers, Meha and Utsav couldn’t be more different, but one look at them together and you’ll know exactly what love looks like.

The wedding celebrations began with a small cocktail party in Delhi for all those who would be unable to attend at Samode.

Meha’s dad, the rockstar, was always the last one off the dance floor.

AKP-destination-wedding-photographer-samodh-palace-8

AKP-destination-wedding-photographer-samodh-palace-7

The festivities at Samode were kicked off with the Haldi, which was a small affair that took place in Meha’s suite terrace. There was a fountain, which encouraged a Holi-like ending to the rituals, complete with EVERYBODY getting haldi in return and being splashed from the fountain!!

Bangalore Wedding Photography Story: Bharati + Rishi, Sheraton Bangalore @ Brigade Gateway

A Bangalore Wedding Photography Story

Bharati & Rishi were wed in Bangalore last month at a wonderfully elaborate wedding at the Sheraton in Bangalore. Since the families were Marwari, the rituals and ceremonies were slightly higher in number and a little more elaborate than usual — a lot of it was back-toback and simultaneous, but there wasn’t a single dull moment. We’ll give them that!

They met while they were both working in Bombay, away from their respective homes in Kolkata and Bangalore. Even though they met because it was “suggested” by members of their respective families, they hit it off instantly and became a unit – lovingly called Baa-Rish!

Bharati’s family and friends flew in from Kolkata and pretty much took over the hotel for the weekend! The celebrations began with a welcome lunch, during which we snuck away to get a few photos of the couple.

The evening function was the Ring Ceremony where, in addition to the ring exchange, there was a short entertainment programme directed by Bharati herself. The theme of the evening was a monsoon one, keeping Baa-Rish in mind. So there were umbrellas for props, a video presentation of how they met and, of course, the choreographed dances.

Here’s Bharati, very excited about her Sabyasachi lehenga for the evening…

And twirling it around to show off for the camera 🙂

The ring exchange…

For fun, we decided to juxtapose some of the choreographed dance pictures with the practice sessions pictures from earlier that day 🙂

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-8

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-7

At this point, we should probably introduce “Ma”

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-9

This commendable lady is “Ma” to everybody and is the driving force of Bharati’s family. She is Bharati’s maternal grandmother but, in reality, is much more than that. Bharati was raised by Ma and wouldn’t dream of doing anything without her support and approval – in fact Ma (almost) single-handedly organised the wedding, in a town that is is not even her hometown. Ma is equally loved and feared by all in the family and even the organisers, planners and the traditional photographers (from Kolkata) knew whom to ask for direction and permission!

But enough with the serious stuff. Let’s move on with the crazy (un-choreographed) dance, which formed the rest of the evening.

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-10

A long night of partying meant struggling to keep one’s eyes open for Haldi in the morning!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-12

But Bharati was ever ready to strike a pose!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-13

Her 3 Maamajis doted on her and one of them had a fantastic sense of humour, even getting her to laugh at the most unexpected of times.

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-14

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-15

Simultaneously, in another hall, this is what Rishi was up to!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-16

So we thought it would be fun to do this!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-17

Bharati ran off for a quick shower and a change of saree in record time, for the next installment of ceremonies.

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-18

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-19

Like most weddings, things were running behind schedule and while this ceremony was going on, the make up artist had already arrived. Bharati rushed off as soon as she was free to get dressed. I doubt she had even a minute to grab some lunch! But those are the travails of being an Indian bride…

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-11

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-20

Bharati did not have an easy time with bangles on either of the 2 days! It took a lot of soap lather and lotion to get these pretty babies on her wrists!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-21

But she was back to being her happy self once this struggle was done and dusted. And happy to strike a pose for us.

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-23

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-24

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-22

We left her with her friends while we rushed off to catch a piece of the Baraat action.

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-26

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-25

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-27

Enter the bride…

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-28

The ceremony begins. The Kanyadaan was performed by all 3 of Bharati’s Maamajis

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-29

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-30

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-31

Maamaji lightening the moment!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-32

The legendary “joote do, paise lo” scenario…

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-33

Ma and Bharati had a moment before the actual Vidaai

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_BR-2-1

After which Baa-Rish rode of into the sunset… Oops, we mean moonlight!

Madurai Wedding Photography Story: Thiru + Radhika

Radhika and Thiru were married a few months ago in Madurai (and this post is long overdue). When Radhika first got in touch, she mentioned that they had first met at the famous Meenakshi temple in Madurai. So we decided that we just HAD to shoot at the temple — combining their first meet story and bringing in a beautiful setting for the couple shoot.

Sadly, when we reached the temple, we were informed that absolutely NO cameras — including mobile phones — are allowed in the temple compound. We can’t even begin to express how disappointed we were — we were at one of the most beautiful temples of the region and people came from far and wide to pay homage. We had a lovely couple with us, who met at this temple for the first time and it was very special to them.

So we did what we do. Made the best of the situation and shot right outside the temple! And the results were not bad at all, if we do say so ourselves!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-1

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-3

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-5

We couldn’t resist this one from the couple shoot — as soon as we saw the red fire engine and Thiru’s red shirt, the photograph was just begging to be taken! Life has so much more colour when you’re in love, doesn’t it?

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-4

Looking at these guys, would you believe us if we told you that they met through TamilMatrimony? When Radhika told us they met at the temple, she forgot to mention that it was an arranged meeting! And we had absolutely no way of knowing/ guessing when we met them and saw how deeply in love they were…

The following day was the engagement ceremony, at the same hall where the wedding was to be held the next day. So we began with some “staged” photos (pun intended)…

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-6

Thiru’s friends welcoming Radhika into the fold…

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-7

The customary Will-You-Marry-Me on a microphone, no less, for everyone to hear and cheer on…

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-8

And then there was dancing — did we mention that Radhika flew down from London for the wedding? Along with her posse of girlfriends?

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-9

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-10

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-12

Oh! And we weren’t the only ones with SLRs!

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-11

They did make a pretty picture though, right?

The wedding on the following day was in the morning, and the bride started to get ready pretty early! Fortunately, we could get a few of these shots before everything became a mad rush for the hall…

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-13

Arjun_Kartha_Photography_RT-14

She’s so excited to get to the venue and get married already!

After which, they finally managed to get away for a few “Just Married” portraits before we finished for the day and they were rushed off to Thiru’s hometown for more ceremonies and introductions to the extended family!

Haridwar Wedding Photography Story | Namrata + Kunal

When we first got the inquiry for Namrata & Kunal’s wedding in Haridwar, we were a little apprehensive. Well maybe apprehensive is a strong word. More like, we didn’t know what was in store at the wedding. It’s such a famous pilgrimage spot that it’s hard for us to picture it as anything but a deeply spiritual destination swarming with eager pilgrims. A “normal” family affair didn’t fit in with the extraordinary image of Haridwar, in our minds!

But what we found there was a perfectly “normal”, warm and welcoming family and a wonderful couple with the readiest smiles we have ever seen! It was so effortless and a pleasure to shoot with them because each expression was a new version of a smile or laughter! You think we’re exaggerating? Then see for yourself!
